Get your business quoted inside AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Gemini, not just ranked in a list of links. Built into your SEO, never billed as a separate retainer.

No separate AEO feeTransparent pricingNo lock-in

In short:

Answer engine optimization services get your business cited inside AI-generated answers, in Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and voice assistants, rather than only ranked in the blue links below them. The work is structural: answering real customer questions directly, adding schema markup, building entity clarity, and keeping your Google Business Profile and reviews consistent. We build it into your SEO rather than selling it as a separate line item.

That last part is the difference between how we do this and how most agencies sell it.

Answer engine optimization is real work with real value. It’s also the easiest thing in marketing right now to package as a shiny new retainer on top of the SEO you’re already paying for. We think that’s the wrong way round, and we say so in our own writing on AEO vs SEO.

So this page explains what the work actually involves, what it costs when it’s done properly, and how to tell whether you need it at all.

What answer engine optimization actually involves

An answer engine is any system that responds with a composed answer rather than a list of links. Google’s AI Overviews. ChatGPT and Gemini. Siri, when somebody asks it for a plumber nearby. Featured snippets, which have worked this way for years.

These systems don’t read your website the way a person does. They pull passages they can parse confidently, assemble an answer, and cite a handful of sources. Being one of those sources is the entire objective.

Which makes the work concrete rather than mysterious:

  • Answer-first content structure. The answer in the first two sentences, before any context or preamble. A passage that opens with throat-clearing doesn’t get extracted.
  • Question-shaped headings. The exact phrasing customers use, as real headings, with the answer directly underneath.
  • Self-contained passages. Each answer has to survive being lifted out and read alone, without the paragraphs around it.
  • Schema markup. FAQ, Service, LocalBusiness and Organization markup so a parser knows what your page is instead of inferring it.
  • Entity clarity. Consistent facts about who you are, what you do and where you operate, across your site, your Google Business Profile, your listings and your review responses.
  • Specificity over adjectives. Real numbers, named conditions, actual prices. “Usually $150 to $350” gets quoted. “Competitively priced” never does.

None of that’s exotic. It’s what clear technical writing has always looked like. What changed is the cost of getting it wrong: sloppy structure used to cost you a little ranking, and now it costs you the citation entirely.

What we actually do

The deliverables, in the order we run them.

Audit and baseline

We ask the assistants the ten questions your customers ask and record whether you’re named. That becomes the baseline. Without it you have opinions instead of evidence three months from now. We also audit your existing pages for structure, schema and answerability.

Fix what already ranks

Your pages with impressions but no clicks come first, because Google already understands what they are about. Rewriting the opening two sentences and adding a real number often moves them without touching anything else.

Build the answer library

The twenty questions customers ask you on the phone, written as real pages or sections. One question per heading, answered directly, with the specifics most competitors avoid committing to.

Implement schema

FAQ, Service, LocalBusiness and Organization markup across the site, cross-linked properly rather than bolted on page by page. This is a one-time technical job with permanent benefit.

Tighten the entity

Name, services, service area and contact details made consistent across your site, Google Business Profile, directory listings and review responses. Inconsistency gives a machine a reason to cite somebody else.

Measure and repeat

Monthly prompt testing against the baseline, plus the Search Console proxies that move first: impressions on question-shaped queries, featured snippets won, clicks on answer pages.

What this costs

We publish our prices, and answer engine optimization isn’t one of them. Here is why.

For a small local business, roughly eighty per cent of AEO work is the same work as doing SEO properly. The structural rewriting, the schema, the Google Business Profile completeness, the review cadence. Selling that twice under two names would be dishonest.

So it’s built into our ongoing work rather than billed separately.

Package Investment Where AEO fits
Startup Starting at $3,000 paid in full
60-day engagement
Schema and answer-first structure built into the new site from day one, plus a fully completed Google Business Profile
Growth Starting at $7,997 one-time
90 to 120 day engagement
The full rebuild is structured for extraction: question-shaped headings, schema across 12+ service and location pages, 6+ answer articles
Scale Starting at $1,500 per month Ongoing answer library, monthly prompt testing, schema maintenance, review cadence and entity consistency

Full detail on all three is on our packages and pricing page.

If you want a separate AEO quote:

We won’t give you one, and you should be cautious of agencies that will. Ask any of them precisely what work the AEO line item covers that their SEO doesn’t. Sometimes there is a real answer, usually involving entity work or large-scale schema implementation. Frequently the honest answer is that you’re paying twice for structure.

What this looks like in your industry

The method is the same everywhere. What changes is which questions matter and how much the answer is worth.

Dental and medical practices. Patients research heavily before booking, and the questions are predictable. What does a crown cost. Does it hurt. How long does it take. Is it covered. Practices that answer those plainly, with real ranges, get quoted. Practices that write “every smile is unique, contact us for a consultation” don’t. The gap between those two pages is worth more here than in almost any other sector.

Legal. High value, heavily researched, and full of questions people are uncomfortable asking a human first. That makes assistants an obvious first stop. The constraint is accuracy: you can’t publish specifics that vary by jurisdiction without qualifying them, and that qualification has to survive being lifted out of context.

Trades and home services. The research question and the hiring question are different, and they happen hours apart. “Why is my boiler leaking” is where you get cited. “Emergency plumber near me” is where you get hired. Winning the first is how you become the name they recognise in the second.

Remodelers and contractors. Long consideration cycles, big ticket, and a customer who reads for weeks. Cost questions dominate, and almost nobody in the sector answers them on a page. That’s an open goal.

Restaurants and retail. Honestly, the weakest fit. Discovery here happens in maps, reviews and social rather than in composed answers. Your profile matters far more than your content, and we would tell you to spend there instead.

What our clients say

Trusted by small businesses

Who this is for, and who it isn’t

We would rather tell you now than three months in.

It fits if

  • Customers research before they call you. Dentists, chiropractors, law firms, med spas, remodelers, anything where people compare before booking.
  • You get the same twenty questions on the phone every week and none of them are written down anywhere.
  • Your site ranks reasonably but the traffic has softened as AI Overviews expanded.
  • You have a Google Business Profile and real reviews, so there is something for an assistant to corroborate.

It does not fit if

  • Your Google Business Profile is incomplete. Fix that first. It’s free, it takes an afternoon, and it moves local visibility more than anything on this page.
  • You’re at capacity. More inquiries will cost you money and reputation if you can’t service them.
  • You sell purely on urgency. Emergency trades are won in the map pack at the moment of need, not in a considered AI answer.
  • You want a separate AEO retainer. We don’t sell one, so we’re the wrong agency for that brief.

Mistakes we see most often

Four patterns account for most of the wasted effort here.

  • Publishing volume instead of answers. Forty thin articles generated quickly won’t get you cited. Twenty pages that each answer one question with a real number will. The instinct to write more is usually wrong, and it’s expensive.
  • Optimising pages nobody reads. The temptation is to start with the pages you like. Start instead with the ones that already have impressions in Search Console, because Google already understands those and the lift comes faster.
  • Rewriting a page that already converts. If something ranks and produces inquiries, document why and copy the pattern elsewhere. Don’t improve it. That’s how businesses lose rankings they already had.
  • Reporting visibility instead of revenue. A dashboard showing AI mentions climbing while the phone stays quiet is measuring the wrong thing. Booked jobs remain the number that counts, and any agency reporting to you should agree that before the work starts.

There is a fifth, less obvious one. Businesses skip the baseline because it feels like admin, then three months later nobody can say whether anything improved. Ten questions, recorded once, before you change anything. It takes twenty minutes and it settles every argument later.

How this works alongside your SEO

Answer engines pull overwhelmingly from pages that already rank. That’s the single most important thing to understand about this work, and it’s why AEO without SEO doesn’t function.

Authority, relevance, links and technical health are what get you into the candidate set. Structure, clarity and schema are what get you quoted once you’re there. You need both, and the order matters.

It also means the two aren’t in competition for budget. The same rewrite that makes a passage extractable makes the page clearer for a human, which tends to improve conversion at the same time. We’ve watched that happen often enough to treat it as the norm rather than a bonus.

For the fuller explanation of how the two disciplines relate, our AEO vs SEO guide covers it, and the AI SEO strategy playbook sets out the 90-day sequence we follow.

What to expect, and when

Nobody can promise a citation. What we can set out honestly is the sequence and the realistic timing.

Window What moves What you should see
Weeks 1 to 4 Baseline recorded, top pages restructured, schema implemented Nothing externally yet. This is groundwork, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling
Weeks 4 to 10 Featured snippets on restructured pages, answer library going live Movement in Search Console on question-shaped queries. First snippets won
Months 3 to 6 Authority compounding, entity consistency settling, reviews accumulating Your name appearing in assistant answers for some of your ten baseline questions
Month 6 onward Coverage widening across more questions and more assistants Citations on a majority of your core questions, and inquiries that mention finding you through AI

Two honest caveats. Assistant answers vary between users, sessions and phrasings, so we track patterns across ten questions and three months rather than celebrating a single result. And a business with almost no reviews or an incomplete profile will move slower than this table suggests, because there is less for a machine to corroborate.

If your baseline shows you already being named for most of your questions, we will tell you that the money is better spent elsewhere. That has happened, and it will happen again.

One more thing worth saying plainly. The businesses that move fastest here are not the ones with the biggest budgets. They are the ones that already know their customers, already answer the same questions on the phone every week, and simply have not written any of it down. If that describes you, most of the work is transcription rather than invention, and it goes quicker than you expect.

Frequently asked questions

What are answer engine optimization services?

Answer engine optimization services get your business cited inside AI-generated answers such as Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and voice assistants, rather than only ranked in the links below them. The work involves answer-first content structure, question-shaped headings, schema markup, entity consistency and review cadence. For a local business most of it overlaps with doing SEO properly.

Do you offer AEO as a separate service?

No, and that’s deliberate. For a small local business roughly eighty per cent of answer engine optimization is the same work as good SEO, so billing it twice under two names would not be honest. It’s built into our Startup, Growth and Scale packages instead, at the prices published on our packages page.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO means answer engine optimization and GEO means generative engine optimization. Both describe getting cited inside AI answers and the tactics overlap almost entirely. GEO is usually framed around generative systems like ChatGPT specifically. Be careful with the acronym, because geofencing is an unrelated advertising method that shares it.

We wrote a separate piece on geofencing marketing precisely because the two get confused, and buying the wrong one is an expensive mistake.

How long before AEO work shows results?

Structural changes to existing pages can affect featured snippets within a few weeks. Being cited by AI systems tends to follow the authority you build over months, in the same pattern as organic rankings. Anyone promising AI visibility in thirty days is either targeting questions nobody asks or isn’t being straight with you.

How do you measure whether it worked?

We record a baseline before changing anything by asking the assistants ten questions your customers would ask and noting whether you’re named, then repeat monthly. Alongside that we track the Search Console proxies that move first: impressions on question-shaped queries, featured snippets won, and clicks on answer pages. Automated AI visibility trackers exist but aren’t reliable enough to report on yet.

Does my business need AEO if I already rank well?

Possibly not yet. If your rankings hold and your inquiry volume is steady, the honest advice is to fix anything incomplete in your Google Business Profile first and watch your question-shaped queries in Search Console. If impressions on those hold while clicks fall, that’s the signal that answers are absorbing traffic you used to get.

Will AI Overviews reduce my website traffic?

On simple informational searches, yes, because the answer appears without a click. On commercial and local searches the effect has been much smaller, since somebody who needs a service today still has to choose a provider and contact them. For most local businesses the revenue-producing queries are largely intact.

Do you work outside Boston?

Yes. We’re based in Peabody, Massachusetts and work with small businesses across the United States. Local SEO work is location-specific by nature, but nothing about answer engine optimization requires us to be in your city.

Want to know if AI is already recommending you?

We’ll run your ten customer questions through the assistants and tell you where you stand, free. If the answer is that you don’t need this yet, we’ll say so. Or call 857-574-5308.
