Do restaurants need Google Ads?

Usually not for discovery. Someone searching “tacos near me” sees the map, the photos and the reviews, and your Google profile wins or loses that moment without a bid. Paid search earns its keep in a few narrow places: defending your own name from delivery apps, catering and private event searches, and a short, deliberate push behind an opening.

The hungry search is settled on the map, above any ad

Watch anyone pick a dinner spot on their phone. They type a craving, glance at the map results, flick through photos, maybe skim a review or two, and decide in under a minute. A text ad floating over that process rarely changes the outcome, because appetite responds to pictures of food and a four-point-something rating, not to headline copy.

So when a restaurant owner asks us to run discovery ads, we usually talk them out of it. The same money moved into professional photos, an accurate menu on the profile and steady review replies moves covers in a way clicks can’t, which is the territory of your restaurant’s local SEO. An agency that sells you the campaign anyway is billing you for activity, and you’d eventually notice.

That honesty cuts both ways, though. There are a handful of searches around a restaurant where paying is clearly right, and skipping them leaves money on the table every single week.

Delivery apps bid on your restaurant’s name. Answer them

Search your own restaurant tonight and see what sits at the top. In most markets it’s a third-party delivery app or a reservation platform, advertising on your name, catching diners who were already coming to you, and taking a commission on orders that should’ve been direct. They pay for that position precisely because your regulars’ searches are the most valuable traffic in your world.

A branded campaign flips it back. When the ad, the page and the search all match, Google charges very little for the click, and every one of those diners lands on your site, your menu, your ordering link, your reservation book. No commission, no middleman between you and a customer who literally asked for you by name.

It’s the least glamorous campaign we run and often the clearest win in restaurant advertising. Set it up once, spend lightly, and stop renting back your own customers.

The short list of restaurant searches worth real money

Beyond defending your name, paid search makes sense exactly where the buyer isn’t choosing with their stomach in the next ten minutes:

  • Catering plus your town. Offices and event planners compare vendors like any business purchase, and a strong catering page with an ad above it competes for orders worth many dinner checks at once.
  • Private dining and function room searches. Rehearsal dinners, showers, holiday parties. High value, booked weeks out, and most restaurants never bid on them.
  • Seasonal ordering windows. Holiday catering and big-game weekends concentrate real purchase intent into a few short weeks each year.
  • A bounded opening push. A new location or concept can justify a month or two of awareness spend while the map listing and reviews catch up, with a firm end date attached.

Notice what’s missing: filling slow weeknights. That job belongs to the audience you own, your email and text list, and to the feed, where Meta ads for restaurants put your food in front of locals who weren’t searching at all. It’s all one system in a full restaurant marketing plan, and we’ll show you where each dollar of effort belongs on a free discovery call.

Count the results in covers and orders, never in clicks

Restaurant advertising has a measurement problem most trades never face: the conversion happens at a host stand or a pickup counter, not on a thank-you page. So before any campaign spends a nickel of real budget, the plumbing goes in. Online ordering gets tracked to the completed order, not the menu view. Reservation clicks get counted through to the booking platform. Catering inquiries run through a tracked number and a tagged form, so when an office orders lunch for forty, you know which search sent them.

That wiring is what makes the honest conversation possible later. When the branded campaign shows direct orders recovered from the apps, you keep it. When the catering campaign books two events a month, you grow it. And when a campaign produces nothing a server ever carried to a table, we end it and say so in the report, because a restaurant margin has no room for advertising that merely looks successful. The spend stays small, the proof stays concrete, and the decisions stay yours.

Frequently asked questions

A delivery app outranks us on our own name. What now?

Run a small branded campaign and fix the page it lands on. Your click costs stay low because everything matches the search, and the direct orders you recover stop paying app commissions. It’s usually live within days.

Would ads help fill our slow Tuesdays?

Rarely. Nobody searches their way into a Tuesday reservation; they get reminded into one. A text to your regulars or a special in the feed beats a search ad for that job every time, and we’d rather you spend accordingly.

Is advertising our catering menu actually worth it?

If you have real catering capacity, yes. Those buyers search like businesses, compare options and order repeatedly once they trust you. One office account can quietly outearn a month of walk-ins.

We’re opening a second location. Do ads make sense then?

For a defined stretch, yes. A new spot has no review history and a cold map listing, so a bounded campaign bridges the gap while the profile earns its footing. We set the end date before we set the budget.

If we only ever ran one paid campaign, which one?

The branded defense. It protects revenue you already created, costs comparatively little, and the moment you pause it the apps happily resume collecting the toll.
