How should a landscaper spend a Facebook ads budget?

Point it at routes, not at a whole county. Meta lets you advertise on the exact streets your trucks already stop on, so each new signup makes the route cheaper to serve. Concentrate the heaviest spend in the short spring stretch when homeowners pick their company for the year, and give maintenance and design-build separate campaigns, because those two buyers scroll past very different things.

Ads that make routes denser, not maps wider

Drive time is the silent tax on a landscaping company. Every unbilled minute between stops comes out of the margin, which means the most valuable lead in your market is the one who lives two doors from an existing client. Most landscaper advertising ignores this completely and sprays a twenty-town radius, buying leads the trucks then subsidize.

We invert it. Campaigns get drawn as small pins around the neighborhoods you already serve, with creative shot on those very streets: the striped lawn, the crisp bed edges, the cleanup trailer at the curb. The neighbors have watched your crew work all season, and the ad converts attention your mowers already earned. Familiarity does half the selling before the offer even loads. When a street hits three or four clients, we widen the pin one block and repeat. It’s slower than blasting a county, and it builds a book of business your competitors would need years to copy. The full landscaper marketing playbook stacks this with the rest of the channels.

Density also changes what a lead is worth, so we report it that way. A signup inside an existing route beats the identical contract three towns over, and the monthly numbers you get from us say so out loud. Most landscapers have never seen ad spend graded against drive time before. Once you have, you stop celebrating lead counts and start watching the metric that actually moves profit.

The spring window is won in February

Most of a maintenance company’s year gets signed in about six weeks of spring. The landscapers who win that window prepared for it while the trailers were parked:

  • Creative banked from last season, because you can’t film green lawns in March and the window won’t wait
  • Cleanup offers first: spring cleanups are the natural entry job, and the crews are on the property anyway
  • Season contracts as the follow-up, pitched by retargeting everyone who claimed a cleanup
  • Lead forms that ask lot size and services, so quoting takes minutes instead of a site visit
  • A renewal push to last year’s one-off customers from your synced contact list, your cheapest wins of the whole season

Then the calendar flips twice more: a smaller fall cleanup push, and plowing add-on ads to your own client base once the leaves are done. None of it improvised, all of it queued before the season needs it. The late-winter prep stretch is also when we rebuild the forms, redraw the pins around last season’s route changes and load the renewal messages, so March becomes launch week instead of production week. By the time your competitors post their first ad, you’ve been in the feed for a month.

Mowing contracts and patios never belong in one campaign

Landscaping is two businesses wearing one logo. The maintenance buyer wants reliability, a fair contract and an answer this week; the design-build buyer is shopping a dream over months and judges you entirely on finished-project visuals. Mix them in one campaign and each sees the other buyer’s message, which converts neither.

So we split everything: separate audiences, separate creative, separate objectives. Maintenance runs on lead forms and neighborhood pins. Design-build runs on project reels and a consultation path, with longer retargeting windows to match the longer decision. The split pays off in reporting too. Maintenance gets judged on contract signups and route fit, design-build on consult quality and project size. Blended together, the averages lie: cheap mowing inquiries hide what a project lead truly costs. Separated, you can see which of your two businesses deserves the next budget increase, and that’s a call worth making on numbers rather than a hunch. And one honest boundary on the whole channel: the person searching for lawn care today, right now, gets caught by the map pack, not the feed. That is local SEO’s job, and we treat the two as teammates rather than forcing either into the other’s position. If you want the split scoped for your company, a discovery call takes about twenty minutes.

Frequently asked questions

When should our spring campaigns actually start?

Weeks before the grass moves. Homeowners decide on a company while the yard is still brown, so we launch in late winter and let the cleanup offers warm up as the ground does. Starting when the grass is already growing means paying peak prices to chase contracts your competitors signed weeks ago.

Can Meta really target a handful of neighborhoods?

Yes, with radius pins around addresses you choose. The audiences are small, so the play is patient frequency rather than reach: the same few thousand households seeing your work through the season.

Should the offer be a cleanup or a season contract?

Cleanup first. It’s the low-commitment entry job that gets your crew on the property, and the contract conversation happens naturally afterward, helped along by retargeting and a follow-up sequence. Leading with the contract asks for a year of commitment from a stranger, and strangers say no.

What creative does the design-build side need?

Finished-project reels and progress timelapses, nothing else comes close. A sixty-second transformation of a backyard gets saved and shared in ways a service list never will. If you do serious hardscape, that side has its own playbook on our masonry pages.

Is advertising snow plowing worth it?

To strangers, rarely. To your own summer client list and the streets around existing routes, absolutely: the trucks are already there, and a plowing add-on deepens exactly the density the whole strategy is built on. It also keeps your name in the client’s driveway all winter, which makes the spring renewal almost automatic.
